What is a TENS machine?

TENS stands for Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

Electrodes are placed on the skin around the painful area. When and TENS unit is turned on, a light current is delivered through the electrodes to the skin and underlying tissue. The sensation feels a bit like pins and needles or tingling.

This is thought to disrupt the pain cycle by sending a different sensation to the pain site.
